NEWS UPDATES:

Riders On The Storm

Judges at Sunday?s USASA halfpipe competition on Bald Mountain?s Lower Warm Springs were looking for many things, mainly for riders to maintain momentum and flow cleanly from one trick to another. Amplitude was important, or, as snowboard team coach James Young explained, ?You want a zip, zip, zip, zap with a whammy.? The kids grasped the concept, including Sun Valley-based Youth Men?s champ Kenny Ballou, 14, above. He evoked audible gasps from 100 spectators by pulling off switchback and backside 7s with plenty of gravity-defying air. Ballou?s 26.9-point score was the best of the day and earned him a berth in further national competition. Photo by Willy Cook
