Spurred into action

Bullriders explode from chute

For a while, it didn’t look like any of the 15 cowboys in the 22nd Annual Days of the Old West Hometown Bullriding contest were going to make 8 seconds. Thirteen ate dirt. The next-to-last cowboy on Saturday night, last year’s champ Chad Boyd, then had a nice 80-point ride that looked like a winner. The final contestant was Chad Lukkasson, who also lasted 8 seconds on a ride strikingly similar to Boyd’s. But Lukkasson, shown above leaving the chute, spurred his bull—and that accounted for the winning two points in his 82-point buckle ride. Express photo by Willy Cook
