Ore wagons featured in Wagon Days poster

Photograph resurfaces after 2007 Wagon Days cancellation

    With the cancellation of Wagon Days in 2007 because of the Castle Rock Fire, the public didn’t get the opportunity to see the fine artwork selected that year for the Wagon Days commemorative poster. However, that opportunity returns this year because the 2007 poster, featuring a photograph of the historic Ketchum ore wagons by Michael Edminster, has been selected once again.
    “We were not able to feature Michael’s beautiful depiction of the ore wagons in the manner that we intended,” Wagon Days Coordinator Heather LaMonica Decker stated in a news release. “The parade was canceled and the Wagon Days team volunteered to help with the fires. We distributed the posters and T-shirts that we couldn’t use for Wagon Days to the firefighters who came to save our community.
    “This year’s poster features the same photo as in 2007, but with some notable graphic changes,” Decker stated. “Last year, with fires looming and Wagon Days again being in jeopardy, we were reminded of Michael’s beautiful photo that wasn’t really seen by the public. We are thrilled to feature Michael’s art this year.”
    The image is a dramatic photograph of the six ore wagons lined up together with Bald Mountain in the background. Edminster took advantage of early morning light to capture the image.
    Decker explained that shooting the wagons in the morning was not Edminster’s first option for the photograph.
    “He tried to get some shots the afternoon the wagons were brought to the Sun Valley stables, but there were too many people around,” Decker stated. “The next morning, he arrived early, set up his camera aimed at the wagons and Baldy and started shooting with the sunrise.”
    Edminster is well-known for his photography, particularly his outdoor images and shots of various festivals including Wagon Days and the Trailing of the Sheep. He has a studio in Bellevue where he also creates mosaic artwork.
    Decker reported that Edminster first came to the Wood River Valley in 1981 as a sheepherder, when he and his wife, Lynne, and their children trailed a band of sheep from Gooding to Lake Creek. He settled permanently in the valley in 1986.

Poster signing
A Wagon Days commemorative poster signing has been scheduled for 5-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in conjunction with a Business After Hours event at the Ore Wagon Museum on East Avenue and Fifth Street in Ketchum. Posters will be available for purchase. The price unsigned is $20. For an extra $5, photographer Michael Edminster will sign his work.
