Bike path work to begin Monday

Project funded by two-year levy

    The first phase of a two-year reconstruction project of the Wood River Trail bike path is set to begin Monday, June 16, in the Bellevue area.
    Reconstruction of the trail mostly involves smoothing out the path’s asphalt surface.
    It was enabled by a two-year tax levy passed by Blaine County voters last year. The funds will allow the Recreation District to reconstruct the 20-mile trail from south of Bellevue to Hulen Meadows north of Ketchum. The levy will last two years, collecting $1.75 million each year, by adding $21 per $100,000 of taxable property value.
    Recreation District Executive Director Jim Keating said the plan is to begin work on the southern part of the bike path because there has been less deterioration there and it can be repaired for less cost if that work is done soon. He said repairs there can be done by milling the base and reusing that material, while the more deteriorated northern section will have to be covered with new material.
    Janelle Conners, Recreation District trails assistant, said this season’s portion of the project will begin south of Bellevue and end at East Fork Road in September. She said initial work will run from Gannett Road north to Oak Street in Bellevue and from Spruce Street in Bellevue north to Woodside Boulevard.
    She said section closures will be in effect during reconstruction and will be signed appropriately. Some road closures will be in effect within Bellevue city limits; detours and signs will be in place.
    “As sections of the Wood River Trail will be closed during reconstruction efforts, motorists are encouraged to use extra caution and share the road with bicyclists and pedestrians,” Conners said.

The success of the 2013 temporary levy has enabled the two-year reconstruction of the Wood River Trail so as to ensure another 30 years of enjoyment for all.”
