SVSEF among top U.S. club programs

    The Sun Valley Ski Educa-tion Foundation (SVSEF) has been certified by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association as one of 10 ski and snowboard clubs deemed through a certifi-cation process to be standard bearers in the U.S., according to a May 28 SVSEF press re-lease.
    It means the SVSEF and other top clubs offer the best principles and practices to their constituencies.
    “This is an exciting time for the USSA and its partnership with clubs. This process not only recognizes club excel-lence, but also gives a clear roadmap for all clubs to become stronger organizations,” said Brian Krill, USSA Club Devel-opment Manager.
    He added, “This is a strate-gic move for the USSA to sup-port clubs, be a more club-based organization and better understand the challenges and opportunities that exist for clubs in every corner of the country.”
    Certification was decided through a multi-faceted process over several months. The proc-ess included rigorous self-study by the clubs, peer review, an on-site visit and appraisal con-ducted by the USSA High Per-formance staff and other ski and snowboard leaders.
    The clubs were graded on a scale and final designations ranged from basic certification to bronze, silver and gold lev-els.
    Of the 430 USSA-certified clubs nationwide, eight were rated gold level, and two, in-cluding the SVSEF, merited silver recognition.
    The clubs were recognized on May 14 during the annual USSA Club Excellence Confer-ence in Park City, Utah, which was attended by a record num-ber of more than 100 represen-tatives of clubs from around the country, according to Krill.
    Krill added, “The SVSEF was further recognized for its excellence in and focus on (the) unlimited potential and com-munity development in the cer-tification process.”
    In 2012-13, the SVSEF led all youth winter sports organiza-tions in the U.S. with 600 mem-bers registered with the USSA. Ski and Snowboard Club-Vail (Colorado), was runner-up with 525.
    During the 2013-14 season, the SVSEF attracted 512 stu-dent/athletes, the second-largest enrollment in the club’s 48-year history. The current benchmark of 517 members was set in 2006-07.
    The USSA Gold-Certified Clubs were: Burke Mountain Academy, East Burke, Vt.; Kill-ington Mountain School, Kill-ington, Vt.; New York Ski Edu-cation Foundation, Wilming-ton, N.Y.; Stratton Mountain School, Stratton, Vt.; Water-ville Valley BBTS, Waterville Valley, N.H.; Buck Hill Ski Rac-ing Club, Burnsville, Minn.; Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, Vail, Co.; and Rowmark Ski Academy, Salt Lake City, Utah.
    USSA Silver-Certified Clubs were: International Snowboard Training Center, Frisco, Co.; and Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Sun Valley.
    Additionally, four USSA clubs are continuing to work through the certification proc-ess, including the Park City Ski Education Foundation, Park City Freestyle Ski Team and Utah Olympic Park Sports Club and the Squaw Valley Ski Team located in Olympic Valley, Ca. Twenty other clubs are slated to begin the certification proc-ess next season.
