Leader of the pack
A herding dog named Gringo leads a posse of weed-eating goats along the Wood River Trail bike path Wednesday in Bellevue. The Blaine County Recreation District, which maintains the path, hired contractor Prescriptive Livestock Services, based in Idaho and Washington, to bring some 400 goats the valley to continue a project to manage noxious weeds along the route. The main target is knapweed, a high-protein plant that the goats tend to prefer over grasses. The goats digest about 95 percent of the knapweed seeds, preventing them from sprouting new plants. The goats have started in the south and will gradually move north. Path users are encouraged to observe the goats from afar but to avoid interfering with their feeding. Photo by Roland Lane
