Still no applicants for Zone 4 trustee vacancy

School board to search district-wide to fill empty post

In spite of appeals from the Blaine County School District that “our students need you,” the deadline came at 3 p.m. Monday and no one had filed an application for the Zone 4 trustee post that has been vacant since the resignation of former Trustee Paul Bates in January.
It was the second 30-day period the district has held for applicants living within Zone 4, which encompasses west Ketchum and areas of Blaine County west of state Highway 75 from just north of Hailey to the border of Custer County. In an earlier 30-day application period, accountant Kirk Peterson, a mid-valley resident, filed a letter of interest, the equivalent of an application, but withdrew it shortly before he was to be interviewed by the school board.
Clerk of the Board Laurie Kaufman wrote in an email Tuesday that the district, in accord with state law, will next put together a new timeline and seek an applicant living within any of the district’s five trustee zones.
Idaho Code 33-504 provides that if no person is selected to be trustee from the affected zone within 90 days after a vacancy is declared that the school board can then seek a person to fill the vacancy district-wide.
If the vacancy is not filled within 120 days of when it was declared, state law provides that the responsibility of filling the post then goes to the county Board of Commissioners.
