Harkins selected as sheriff’s chief deputy

Appointment leaves vacancy in KPD chief position

     Ketchum Police Chief Steve Harkins has been appointed chief deputy to Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey. The announcement was made Thursday afternoon.

     The appointment is an internal promotion for Harkins, since law enforcement for the city of Ketchum is provided through a contract with the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office.

     Harkins said Thursday that there will be a transition period in his move to the chief deputy position and that a new Ketchum police chief will be appointed later.

     Harkins, with 23 years of experience in law enforcement, has served as Ketchum police chief since the law enforcement contract was established with the Sheriff’s Office in 2009. He has lived in the Wood River Valley since 1992. He previously served with the Hailey Police Department and with the Sheriff’s Office as a detective.

     Harkins replaces former Chief Deputy Ed Fuller, who retired in March.

     “I am very excited to start my new position as chief deputy for the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office,” Harkins said in a written statement issued to the Idaho Mountain Express. “I am very fortunate and proud to be appointed to this position and to serve with such an outstanding group of people.”

     Harkins was one of three applicants for the chief deputy position.

     Ramsey said Monday that all three were already in command positions with the sheriff’s office.

     “It was a tough decision,” Ramsey said. “I had three good candidates.”
