Runners eager for Boston Marathon

Sawtooth Relay nearly full

By JEFF CORDES
Express Staff Writer

About 150 Idaho runners are registered for the 118th Boston Marathon 26.2-mile run on Monday, April 21 from Hopkinton to Boston, Ma.

The Patriots Day footrace will take place one year after the finish-line bombings at the granddaddy of all American marathons.

Joseph J. Wojcik Jr., 51, of Sun Valley and Alice Schenk, 56, of Rupert are among the Gem State runners signed up for the Boston.

Last June, Schenk was the individual women’s winner of the 62-mile Sawtooth Relay from Stanley to Ketchum for the second straight year. With a 62-mile finish time of 11 hours, 9 minutes and 21 seconds, she shattered her own 2012 course record by 1 hour and 41 minutes.

A runner for 43 years and dedicated to returning to Boston after last year’s tragedy, Schenk then finished her 10th St. George (Utah) Marathon Oct. 5 at 3.52:57 time and qualified for the 118th Boston Marathon. Schenk also ran Boston in 1981, 1996 and 2000.

Sawtooth Relay close to 300

Sawtooth Relay organizer Terry Hoebelheinrich has announced on the relay’s Web site that 287 six-member teams had registered through the deadline of March 30, and that 21 other team entries had been deemed incomplete.

The team limit is 310 for the 23rd annual Sawtooth Relay Saturday, June 14. Visit sawtoothrelay.com for details.

Sawtooth Relay is a non-profit that funds medical research to treat or cure polycystic kidney disease.
