WRHS, Twin Falls battle to 1-1 draw

     The final outcome was a 1-1 draw between the Wood River Wolverines and Twin Falls Bruins in the Great Basin Conference boys’ soccer opener Wednesday at SunWay Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.

     Wood River coach Luis Monjaras thought it was a game the Wolverines should have won. He felt that the penalty kick awarded to Twin Falls late in the game and made for a 1-1 tie by senior Taylor Haman shouldn’t have been called.

     Senior Jose Ortiz, assisted by senior Stephen Pfeiffer, put Wood River on the board three minutes into the game. For the game the Wolverines out-shot the Bruins 17-11. “We had four offsides calls where two goals were scored,” said Monjaras.

     Monjaras added, “After that score we had plenty of opportunities to close the game with a very secure marker. Did we capitalize? No. We hit the crossbar, we had great scoring runs but there were some very unfortunate calls.

     “Twin Falls scored in the 72nd minute with a penalty kick awarded in their favor. They booted the ball past our defense. Our keeper (junior Kyle Weller) came out for the save, diving hands first. The Twin Falls player was coming hard and fast. Our keeper made contact first. Their player was literally four yards late. He tripped and hit Kyle and Twin Falls was awarded the call.

     “In my 10 years of coaching I have never ever seen a call like the one awarded today. I think it even silenced and made the spectators scratch their heads in amazement or shock.”

     Wood River (0-0-2, 0-0-1 league) had won four straight games over Twin Falls by a 14-2 score and had only been beaten by the Bruins once in nine meetings since 2008. So the result was a moral victory for Twin Falls (0-2-1, 0-0-1), which had lost to Rocky Mountain 3-2 and cross-town rival Canyon Ridge 4-1 previously this year.

     Monjaras said, “Our defense keeps performing to their highest. Eron Bates and Miguel Velasco had an amazing game. Overall we will continue working with our offense because we truly have talent but it has not been displayed yet. We have moments but we need consistency for 80 minutes.”

     Wood River travels to Burley (1-2-0, 0-1-0) Monday, Sept. 9 for another GBC clash. Burley has won 6-0 at Pocatello, lost 2-1 at Preston and fell 2-0 at home to upstart Canyon Ridge (4-0-0, 2-0-0) on Wednesday. Canyon Ridge hosts Jerome on Monday and visits Wood River on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
