Feldman, Galpin 1-2 among Emmett road racers

In Masters A 35-plus class

     Ketchum’s Richard Feldman got back in the saddle and won Sunday’s Emmett-Roubaix 55-mile bicycle road race—third event in the George’s Cycles of Boise 2013 Spring Race Series.

     Feldman, 44, of Ketchum’s Durance-Colnago team had sustained a flat tire           in the Chicken Dinner Road Race April 28 south of Nampa, after he won the Jason Broome Memorial Time Trial near Boise April 14.

     Sunday, Masters A 35-plus class winner Feldman broke away on the first gravel section of the course starting at Emmett City Park. The wave-start race attracted 134 cyclists.

     Feldman’s lead at the end of the gravel section was 20 seconds. For the final 33 miles he rode solo and finished in 2.34:56. That gave him a 3:11 victory over overall runner-up and Masters A 45-plus winner Rick Greenawald, 48, of Twin Falls and the Intermountaiun Cycling Organization (2.38:07).

     In third place overall, right behind Feldman in the Masters A 35-plus class was Nate Galpin, 37, of Hailey in 2.38:27. Feldman related afterward, “Galpin played the teammate role to a ‘t’, and on the final climb he climbed away from the group to finish second.”

     Durance-Colnago racer Galpin, after winning Men’s Category 4 class and placing 14th overall in the Jason Broome Time Trial, placed third overall among Men’s Cat. 4 racers in the 48-mile Chicken Dinner road race and moved up to Masters A 35-plus Sunday.

     Feldman said, “Nate proved more than capable of riding with the faster riders.”

     Other Wood River Valley racers finishing 55 miles:

     37—Herberth Corrales, 50, of Hailey and Sun Summit team 2.43:11 (6th Masters B 45-plus).

     57—Billy Collins, 50, of Hailey and Sun Summit team 2.50:28 (11th Masters B 45-plus).

     67—Eric Kafka, 42, of Hailey 2.56:48 (7th Masters A 35-plus).

     Sunday’s 75-mile winner in the Men’s Cat. 1 /2 field was 16-year-old Ethan Reynolds of Boise with a 3.17:38 time.

     Next up: The 2013 Idaho Road Race Championships Saturday, May 11 near Emmett on courses ranging from 38 miles, to 57 miles and 69 miles.
