Riders, freeskiers in Utah for big events

Grand Prix, Wasatch contests


It was a busy Utah weekend for Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation freestyle and snowboard team members.

- SVSEF Snowboard’s Clara Jenner and Elk Spencer received special recognition at the USASA snowboarding event at Park City March 3.

Jenner was crowned “Princess of the Wasatch” for Best Overall U-14 performance of the weekend and the “Cold As Ice” award for effort under pressure. Spencer was presented with a new Nitro snowboard for "Most Improved Riding" in this season's Big Mountain West snowboarding series.

- Younger riders with the SVSEF Snowboard Team along with coaches Jacob Tyler, Jon French and Andy Gilbert attended the King of the Wasatch Big Mountain West Series Championships Feb. 27-March 3 at Park City. Some highlights:

Firsts—Zoe Bacca, Clara Jenner, Elk Spencer and Connor Smith  (halfpipe); Payton Bacca and Clara Jenner (slopestyle); Clara Jenner (Rail Jam).

Seconds—Payton Bacca (HP); Elk Spencer (HP and SS); Zoe Bacca and Connor Smith (SS); Elk Spencer (SS); Phebe Ericksen (Rail Jam).

Thirds—Phebe Ericksen (HP and SS); and Elk Spencer  (SS). 

- Wood River High School senior Ryan Roemer, 17, finished 26th in his first-ever World Cup snowboard boardercross race last weekend during the U.S. Grand Prix Skicross event at Park City.

The Nor-Am sanctioned events allowed athletes to gain valuable FIS ranking points and recognition. Roemer came out of Thursday’s time trial in 21st place and was one of the youngest riders to make the heat rounds of 36.

- Former SVSEF racer Langely McNeal, 28, finished third overall in Friday’s Grand Prix Freeskiing women’s ski cross event on Doc’s Run.

- The SVSEF Freestyle/Freeskiing program has qualified athletes for the  USSA Freestyle/Freesking Junior National Championships March 3-10 at  Park City, Utah. Four athletes in the halfpipe/slopestyle contingent weren’t mentioned in last week’s report submitted to the Express. Completing the squad:

HP/SS: Trevor Hattabaugh, Jacob Beebe, River Kelly, Perry Boyle, Hayes Gilman, Eli Roberts, Brody Buchwalter, Will Griffith, Alvaro Giraldo, Ian Thomas, Parker Nance and Evathea Drougas.

- Posting top class finishes for the SVSEF Freeski Team with coach Clint Lightner at Park City were Trevor Hattabaugh (1st Men’s Open, superpipe), Will Griffith (2nd SS and superpipe), Eli Roberts (1st pipe) and River Kelly (4th SS).
