Sun Valley 5B swimmers continued to dominate the scoring as they competed against 380 swimmers representing 15 teams during the U.S.A. Swimming-sanctioned Snake River Winter Championships Feb. 15-17 at the Nampa pool.
Coach Brian Gallagher took 11 of his qualified swimmers to compete. He gave his team credit for their strong finishes and for posting significant personal best efforts led by 14-year-old Maddie Johnson and 16-year-old Kaedi Fry.
In Women’s ages 13-14, Johnson who led SV5B with five first-place finishes in the 50, 100 and 200 fly, and 50 and 100 back. She also picked up second-places finishes in 500 free and 100 back.
Kaedi Fry, in Women’s 15-16, finished first in 100 breast and had four other finishes in the top three--second in 200 free and 50 breaststroke (best times) and 500 free, and third in 100 free (best time).
Katherine Lemma, 14, swam six personal-best times and posted finishes in the top 10 of all of her events—50 back (7th), 200 free (10th), 50 breast (2nd), 100 free (9th), 200 breast (3rd), and 50 free (9th).
Danielle Doerflein, 14, swam best times in 50 back, 50 free and 100 free and placed in the top 10 in 50 breast (9th) and 200 breast (8th).
Ashley Dreyfus, 15, recorded five top-eight finishes with sixth place in 500 freestyle with a best time. She also finished 100 breast (4th), 200 free (8th) and third places in 200 and 50 breast.
Eva Carlson, 10, finished in the top 10 of her six events in Women’s 9-10: 100 breast (3rd), 200 free (6th), 50 breast (7th), 100 free (7th) and ninth in the 50 back and 100 free.
Petra Glenn, 11, had personal-best times in five races in Women’s 11-12: 50 and 100 breast, 200 free, 100 Individual Medley and 100 back, and she also took eighth in the 200 free.
Marcus Lemma, 17, had five Men’s 17-18 finishes in the top eight, placing second in 50 free, third in 100 free, fifth in 50 fly and seventh for the 200 free.
Gus Kimball, 17, had five top eight finishes: 50 breast (4th), 50 back (6th), 100 breast (5th), 100 back (7th) and seventh in 200 breast.
Mason Johnson, 12, clocked six Men’s 11-12 finishes in the top three placing second in 100 back, 50 and 100 free, and 500 free, a personal-best by nearly nine seconds, and he also took third in 50 back.
His teammate, Zach Deal, 11, turned in best times in each of his six races, finishing in the top six: 100 breast (4th), 200 free (5th), 50 free (6th), 100 IM (3rd) 100 free (6th) and fifth in 50 free.
Relay placings for SV5B:
- In the Women’s 19-and-under 200-yard IM, second place with Kaedi Fry, Ashley Dreyfus, Maddie Johnson and Katherine Lemma;
- In Women’s 14-and-under 200-yard freestyle, second place with Katherine Lemma, Danielle Doerflein, Eva Carlson and Petra Glenn;
- In Men’s 19-and-under 200-yard IM, eighth place with Mason Johnson, Gus Kimball, Markus Lemma, and Zach Deal;
- In Men’s 19-and-under 200-yard freestyle, fifth place with Markus Lemma, Gus Kimball, Mason Johnson, and Zach Deal.
Next SV5B meet is the Caldwell Invitational Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14.
Local swimmers in collegiate meet
Three former Sun Valley 5B swimmers competed Feb. 8-10 for their respective college teams in the 2013 Northwest Conference Swimming Championships held at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash.
They were Taylor Coiner, Michael Coiner and Elizabeth Fry.
The Northwest Conference consists of eight schools: Whitworth College, Pacific University, Linfield College, Lewis & Clark College, University of Puget Sound, Willamette University, and Pacific Lutheran University.
In college scoring, every swimmer finishing in a top 16 place in all events picks up points for their respective team.
Swimming for Lewis & Clark, junior Taylor Coiner finished 14th in the 500 free, 13th in the 200 free and 7th in the 200 back, and also swam on the 800 free relay team which finished 7th.
Lewis & Clark’s women’s Team finished sixth in the final standings.
Junior Michael Coiner, who swims for Whitworth, finished 20th in the 200 Individual Medley, 21st in 100 back, and 11th in the 200 back.
Whitworth’s women’s Team defended its championship position, finishing in first place.
Freshman Elizabeth Fry, swimming for Linfield, picked up 7th in 500 free, 12th in the 400 IM and 9th in 1650 free.
Fry also swam legs on two relays, placing 6th in the 800 free relay and 7th in the 400 free relay, assisting Linfield’s women to seventh place in final scoring.
Both Coiners and Fry were seasoned 5B racers as well as four-year lettermen for the Wood River High School swim team. The Coiners were members of four Idaho High School State Swimming Championship teams, and Fry was a member of two state title squads.
