Squirts among top teams in Jackson Hole meet

Win three games over the holiday

The Sun Valley Youth Hockey Squirts team (ages 9-10) went 3-1 and earned fifth place in the 10-team Jackson Youth Hockey tournament staged Feb. 15-17 at Snow King Ice Arena in Jackson, Wyo.

After dropping its first game 4-0 Friday to eventual third-place winner Park City (Utah), the young Suns reeled off three victories including Sunday’s 3-2 decision over Salt Lake City (Utah) Lightning for fifth place.

Later Sunday, Cody (Wyo.) won the tournament title 6-0 over Pinedale (Wyo.).

In the Lightning game, Sun Valley goal scorers were Ashton Tanner (assist from Colby Speth), Deke Burrell (Seamus O’Connell) and DJ Gralenski (Speth). Goalie Huck Sprong made 12 saves for the winners.

Sun Valley also defeated Utah Junior Grizzlies 3-2 and Jackson Hole Red 5-2.

Scoring against the Junior Grizzlies were Tanner, Fletcher Stumph (Owen Miller) and Burrell (Max Moss, Caelin Bradshaw), with Sprong (9 saves) between the pipes.

Goals against Jackson Red came from O’Connell, Slater Whitehead, Burrell (O’Connell), Miller (Sprong) and Stumph (Zane Lyon). Playing goalie for Sun Valley was Alex Daves (7 saves).
