Jans Cup stops at Snow King Resort

By BETH SARAZINE For the Express

The Intermountain Masters Jans Cup alpine ski racing series returned Jan. 26-27 to Snow King Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyo. for the Harry Baxter Challenge, formerly known as the Cowboy Classic.

The two-day giant slalom event is always a blast for the Masters community. Weather was rather interesting as spring-like conditions greeted the racers on Saturday and Old Man Winter was back in the saddle on Sunday with the snow falling hard by the last run of the weekend.

The Jackson Hole Race Department did a superb job maintaining the course through the weekend with the extremes in weather conditions and kept to a timely schedule to ensure things went off without a hitch.

The soft warm snow of Saturday didn't stop the racers from bringing the heat.

Bob Skinner landed the top overall men's time for the first GS race of the weekend as Dana Alexandrescu left the ladies in the dust securing the overall ladies top time.

Saturday’s division winners included Harry Baxter, Fran Noel, Anna Droege, Keith Thompson, Lynne Hollbacher, Debra Mackenzie, Theresa Dowling, Eva Trane, Dasha Kadulova, Dana Alexandrescu, Jenny Badger, Royal McClure, Tom Wood, Dana Mackenzie, Eric Lyman, James Coleman and Brian McGee.

On Sunday, it was Skinner and Alexandrescu again leading the way down the slopes at Snow King. The excess snow posed a challenge for many as the snow fell hardest by the second run on Sunday.

But these are passionate racers and they persevered to the finish and closed out this season's Harry Baxter Challenge with absolute gusto.

Sunday's division winners included Harry Baxter, Fran Noel, Nancy Auseklis, Stephen Slivinski, Lynne Hallbacher, Debra Mackenzie, Kristi Thompson, Kirstin Kozlowski, Dasha Kadulova, Dana Alexandrescu, Jenny Badger, Royal McClure, Tom Wood, Michael Adams, Brian Frost, James Coleman and Brian McGee.

Park City Masters racer, Dana Alexandrescu, dominated the entire weekend in the overall ladies standings and landed the number one spot for the Harry Baxter Challenge.

Rounding out the overall podium in second place was Beth Sarazine and in third place was Jenny Badger.

Three Park City men battled out the two days of GS to try and win the title with Bob Skinner taking the overall podium just ahead of Craig Norton (2nd) and Rick Slabinski (3rd).

A shout out to all the sponsors who make this race season possible and to the dedicated racers who come out and give their best. Intermountain Masters will be racing again on Feb. 9-10 for a two-day slalom hosted by Snowbasin Resort outside of Ogden, Utah.
