Legislators to visit District 26 towns

Annual series of public forums

District 26 legislators will hold their annual mid-session legislative town hall meetings starting Friday, Feb. 1, in Ketchum.

Sen. Michelle Stennett, D-Ketchum, and Reps. Donna Pence, D-Gooding, and Steve Miller, R-Fairfield, will meet with constituents from Ketchum, Bellevue, Shoshone, Gooding, Wendell and Hagerman during their mid-session district tour.

The meetings are held as public forums, at which constituents can discuss whatever legislative issues most concern them with their legislators. Legislators will also discuss topics they believe will play key roles in the rest of the 2013 session.

This is the first session that Miller will attend. Miller was elected in November to take former Rep. Wendy Jaquet’s vacated seat. He had said during his campaign that if he were to be asked, he would participate in these town hall meetings.

The three will begin with an event on Friday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m. at Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum. The forum will be held in the upstairs room.

The next meeting will be on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 8 a.m. at Oak Street Deli in Bellevue. The legislators will continue to the Shoshone Community Center at 10 a.m., Zeppies Pizza in Gooding at noon, Wendell City Hall at 2 p.m. and complete their day with a 4 p.m. meeting at Hagerman City Hall.

Hot topics so far this session have included the education budget—thrown into flux when voters rejected the Luna educational reforms in November—and a possible repeal of the personal property tax.

Stennett serves on the Senate State Affairs Committee and the Resources and Environment Committee; Miller serves on the House Agricultural Affairs, Appropriations, and Resources and Conservation committees; Pence serves on the House Agricultural Affairs, Education, Resources and Conservation, and Ways and Means committees.
