Billy Goat Loppet set for Jan. 19

Nordic skiing north of Ketchum

The Sun Valley Ski Club and race organizer Jenny Busdon have announced details about the 2013 Billy Goat Loppet cross-country ski race.

It is planned for Saturday, Jan. 19 at Billy’s Bridge north of Ketchum in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area at the foot of the Boulders.

The popular 10-kilometer freestyle ski race organized by the Sun Valley Ski Club and sponsored by Backwoods Mountain Sports of Ketchum begins at 11 a.m.

Registration on the morning of the race takes place at Billy's Bridge parking area between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  Entry fee is $10 per person with young people 18 years and under free of charge.

Busdon said, “As sponsors each year Backwoods has generously offered prizes including $100 and $50 gift certificates along with many other "goodies" for general raffle prizes.

“Hammer Nutrition has also donated product. Cookies and hot chocolate from Perry’s will be available to enjoy after the race. This is a great pre-Boulder warm-up so we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the fun course.

She added, “Last January conditions at Billy's Bridge were such that it was felt we wouldn’t be able to stage the Billy Goat Loppet due to lack of snow. Then two days before the event two big fast-moving snow storms hit the Sun Valley area and it seemed there was every possibility it wouldn't be staged at all due to too much snow!

“This year things are looking really good with Billy's Bridge having been open for many days and the tracks are phenomenal.”
