Power Engineers evacuated Tuesday

Carbon-monoxide alarm prompts emergency response

First responders were kept busy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with a carbon-monoxide alert at Power Engineers in Hailey, a car fire in Ketchum and three medical calls.

Wood River Fire & Rescue personnel responded to a call at Power Engineers at 7:37 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a carbon-monoxide alarm. 

Department Chief Bart Lassman said 13 occupants of the building reported dizziness and headaches after working in a basement room that held computer servers. The servers were being powered by generators after a localized power outage at the company.

Lassman said the building’s occupants said their symptoms faded after being evacuated from the building.

“You take people out of that environment and as long as they haven’t been in that long, a lot of those symptoms go away,” he said.

Carbon-monoxide monitoring at the scene showed that the levels of the toxic gas in the room had already diminished to safe levels. Lassman said it’s likely that the generators were producing the gas and that the room was not being ventilated properly.

Ketchum Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Robbie Englehart said crews responded to a car fire in an alley behind the Washington Street Plaza in Ketchum at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday. Flames from the car impinged on the nearby building, but crews were able to knock the fire down within minutes and the building sustained minimal damage.

Englehart said the fire started in the car’s engine block and was not considered suspicious.
