5th-graders to learn about bullying

School District teams, Advocates to focus on ‘relational aggression’

The Blaine County School District, in partnership with the Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse, is providing an anti-bullying program this week to fifth-graders throughout the district.

School social workers are teaming with Travis Jones, the Advocates’ director of the Engaging Boys to Men program, to provide the anti-bullying program to each of the district elementary schools.

The program is specifically focused on “relational aggression,” which the district described as “more secretive and subtle type of bullying.”

On its website the School District describes relational bullying as harming another through damage or threat of damage to a “relationship or feelings of acceptance, friendship or group inclusion, in person or electronically.”

Examples of relational bullying include arranging public humiliation of someone, intentionally excluding someone from an activity or group, stating or spreading rumors, ignoring someone to punish them, playing “mean” tricks or pranks, ruining a reputation, insulting someone in public or subjecting someone to “offending body language or facial expressions.”

A district news release states that the anti-bullying program will provide students with strategies to recognize and “combat” relational aggression.
