Parke leads Panther girls into hoops season

Road warriors at the start

First-year Carey High School head girls’ basketball coach Merrilee Sears will be looking to Jaide Parke and somebody else for scoring during the 2012-13 hoops season that opened Tuesday at Challis.

In three Panther seasons, senior guard Parke has climbed into the upper echelon of Carey scorers with 842 points including 84 3-pointers. She’s a good, solid season away from eclipsing older sister Jessica Parke (1,129 points, 2010) as the all-time leading Carey scorer.

Jaide cemented her position as a clutch offensive star with a 28-point outburst including a classification record five 3-pointers in Carey’s 47-43 win over Mackay last Feb. 18 that gave the Panthers third place in the State 1A Division 2 tournament at Nampa High School.

Coach Sears is entering her fourth season with a Carey program that has been quite successful since 2007 with an overall 74-46 record and four state trips in five seasons—with a second-place state finish and two thirds in that span.

Last year’s team led by Parke (14.8 ppg) won 12 of its final 16 games and posted an outstanding 12-5 road record. But Carey graduated some vital cogs like star rebounder Micaela Adamson (12.2 ppg, 785 career points), Nicole Gomez (6.2 ppg) and Darby Northcott.

First-team Northside Conference selection Parke is joined by two other seniors, Morgan Parke (6.7 ppg, 8.3 ppg at state) and Angelica Zarate. Returning as juniors are Lilly Rivera, Ashley Durtschi and Daphne Kirkland. Sophomores are Kylie Castle, Natalie Villanueva, Breana Harshbarger and Paige Koudelka.

Coach Sears also has five freshmen who may contribute for she and new Panther junior varsity coach Jake Nilsen, a former Wood River High School baseball standout.

Sears said, “It’s a hard thing when you become a senior and everybody expects so much from you, but Jaide will provide leadership and can play each position on the floor. She’s creative enough to score in different ways. But someone else has to score except Jaide.

“Morgan will have to step up, get more shots and fill the shoes of Micaela. Since we don’t really have any post players, we’ll have to rely on movement with a four-out, one-in offense. You might even see Jaide play some post. On defense, we’ve got some speed and we’ll get after people. We’ll just have to learn how to play aggressively without fouling.”

Carey plays six of its first eight games away from home, then finishes up its 18-game schedule with eight of its final 12 games at home.

Favored in the highly competitive Northside District 4 Conference that has produced the last four State 1A Division 2 champions is two-time defending state champ Dietrich (47-2 over 2 years). Lighthouse Christian, Richfield and Camas County should also contend.
