The city of Sun Valley’s finance manager has been appointed to also take on the job of treasurer, a post left vacant since June with the resignation of Michelle Frostenson.

Angela Walls was appointed to the position on Thursday, Oct. 18, in a unanimous vote by the City Council.

Walls started working for the city as a temporary payroll and payables clerk in early July. She was promoted to finance manager on Aug. 29. She will now perform the duties of city treasurer and finance manager simultaneously.

The city treasurer is responsible for the accuracy of “all the numbers,” Walls said, while the finance manager is the person who crunches them.

“So now I do both.” she said.

Walls said she is excited by the appointment and welcomes the new responsibilities.

“I look forward to learning more about governmental accounting and the challenge of getting it done,” she said. “I enjoy working for the city a lot. All the staff members here seem to be extremely nice and easy to work with.”

Since the resignation of Frostenson, who also functioned as treasurer and finance manager, the treasurer’s responsibilities have been performed by Virginia Egger, interim executive assistant to the mayor.

“This is another addition to the city staff that we are accumulating for the benefit of the city and its citizens,” Mayor DeWayne Briscoe said at the council meeting. “I think it’s the start of a great team in the administration of the city.”

Reading from a prepared statement, Briscoe said Walls brings more than 11 years of experience in applied accounting, human resource benefit administration, audit and budget preparation and financial reporting. He said she is a graduate of Wood River High School, where she finished in the top 10 of her class and was the recipient of both Presidential and Citizenship awards.

“I just want to say that it’s terrific that we’re hiring a Wood River High School graduate,” Councilwoman Michelle Griffith said. “Those kids need jobs.”

Briscoe said Walls is a “motivated learner” and her performance “exceeds expectation.”

“Most notable is her confidence and experience in improving internal controls for the use of city resources,” he said. “In addition, Angela’s professional approach in working with department heads and the staff is one of partnership, with high expectations, poise and a good sense of humor.”

Councilman Nils Ribi agreed.

“She seems to be a great fit for the city,” he said.
