The valley was jilted!

The Federal Aviation Administration wooed Blaine County with the promise of blue skies, lower height and distance minimums, and increased landing reliability, as well as abiding love forever after. The FAA gave us a $6 million-dollar engagement ring in the form of an environmental impact statement. They led the county down the primrose-lined path of site selection for three years. And then just when the two lovebirds were about to go through the arrival gate of airport matrimony, the FAA hands us a "Dear John" letter that said, in essence, "Fuggedaboutit. I've fallen in love with a sage grouse and taken a vow of poverty! You are on your own—see ya."

We should sue the FAA for alienation of affection, loss of consortium and breach of promise. Or we could just continue to moan about our romantic abandonment and fantasize about future temporary airport solutions that won't overcome the physical mountain limitations surrounding Hailey, or change the diversion-producing weather, or reduce the high air fares, or overcome the lack of airline competition that makes air travel to and from Hailey too costly and so erratic—and keeps us noncompetitive with other resort communities.

One of these days our community will need to stop talking past each other and start flying together, preferably before Horizon and SkyWest are no longer interested in serving even an over-priced, but steadily declining, market segment.
