Winter Games puts spotlight on figure skaters

The Sun Valley Figure Skating Club hosted its 2012 Winter Games Competition on Saturday, Feb. 11. The one-day event drew skaters from Jackson Hole, Wyo. and Boise, as well as most local competitive skaters.

Competitive groups of up to seven were a challenge for the younger skaters.

Higher level teens used the smaller group sizes to test their programs for the upcoming Jackson Hole Invitational and the 2012 Sun Valley Summer Championships in July.

For Sun Valley, Alexandra Harten, Joyce Chan, Caitlin Sholtis and Isabella Bourret competed at qualifying levels.

Skating at the Novice Ladies level, Harten won gold medals in both the Novice Short Program and in Novice/Intermediate Artistic, and a silver medal in Free Skate.

Joyce Chan and Caitlin Sholtis competed against Harten in Novice/Intermediate Artistic, with Chan winning silver and Sholtis bronze.

Isabella Bourret competed at the Juvenile level, winning three silver medals in Free Skate, Artistic and Juvenile/Pre-Juvenile Showcase.

Competing at non qualifying levels were Emma Stuessi, Travis Flynt, Tara Ware, Lane Letourneau, Katie Peters, Alex Stuessi, Blake Letourneau, Aurora Wilkinson, Antonia Avery, Sheldon Gentling, Prescott Potter, Kenny Pratt, Tatum Fuller, Noelle Weaver and Christine DuFur.

Competing at the Pre-Juvenile level, Emma Stuessi won gold in both Free Skate and Artistic and placed third in Showcase; Travis Flynt won gold in Showcase, and Tara Ware took fourth in Showcase.

In Preliminary Free Skate, Group A, Blake Letourneau won silver and Alex Stuessi placed fourth; in Group B, Lane Letourneau captured gold.

In the Preliminary Artistic event, Alex Stuessi won gold, Lane Letourneau silver and Blake Letourneau bronze, while in Preliminary Showcase, Blake Letourneau won gold and Alex Stuessi silver.

In Pre-Preliminary Free Skate, Aurora Wilkinson won bronze and Sheldon Gentling placed fourth, while in Pre-Preliminary Artistic, Wilkinson won gold, Avery silver, and Prescott Potter bronze.

In Pre Preliminary Showcase, Kenny Pratt won gold, Gentling silver and Avery bronze. In Non Test Free Skate, Tatum Fuller captured silver and Christine DuFur bronze. In Non Test Artistic, Noelle Weaver won silver, DuFur the bronze and Fuller placed fourth. In Non test Showcase, Weaver took silver. Blake Letourneau and Alex Stuessi won Pairs Showcase.

Competing in Basic Skills were Saba Grossman, Murphy Kendall, Jessica Blackburn, Jacqueline Cronin, Carson Vogel, Bella Martua, Camilla Ippolito and Skylar Runswick.

In the Free Skate 1 Program event, Saba Grossman won gold, Murphy Kendall silver, and Jessica Blackburn bronze.

In the Basic 4 Program event, Jacqueline Cronin won gold and Carson Vogel silver, and, in Basic 3, Bella Martua captured the gold.

SVFSC's newest skaters, Camilla Ippolita and Skylar Runswick competed in the Snowplow Sam-Basic Program 1 event. Ippolita won gold and Runswick the silver.

USFS Testing

U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) Testing took place after the Feb. 13 competition.

Grace Hoffman passed Pre Preliminary Free Skate.

Passing ice dancing tests were Lisa-Marie Allen, Shayna Moellenberg, Grace Hoffman and Grace Cleveland.

Allen passed the Paso Doble to complete her Pre-Gold Pattern Dance test level. Allen also passed the Quickstep gold level test. Hoffman passed the Blues and Starlight Waltz Pattern Dance tests, completing her Pre Gold level.

Moellenberg passed the American Waltz and Rocker Foxtrot Silver Pattern Dance tests, and Cleveland passed the Swing Dance, Cha Cha and Fiesta Tango, completing her Pre Bronze Pattern Dance test level.
