Bulldogs outlast WRHS boys 61-53

On Hailey court

Wood River senior guard Austin Hafer lines up a pass during his team’s road victory over the Community School Jan. 4 at The Fish Tank in Sun Valley.

Senior point guard Austin Hafer put the WoodRiverHigh School boys’ varsity basketball team on his back and nearly led the Wolverines to victory over the Kimberly Bulldogs Tuesday night on the Hailey hardwoods.

Hafer (9.3 ppg) scored a season-high 20 points in the absence of Wood River top scorer Stone Sutton (sickness) and the host Wolverines (2-10, 0-4 league) nearly upset the Bulldogs (8-3). Kimberly won 61-53 to sweep the season series with a pair of eight-point victories.

Trailing 12-5 in the first quarter, WoodRiver stormed back with determined halfcourt man-to-man defense and built a four-point lead in the third quarter. But turnovers (10 of the team’s 26 in the third) helped Kimberly put together a 9-0 run to end the third. The ‘Dogs built a 43-36 lead and maintained it until the end.

The officials called a tight game, whistling 51 fouls and sending players to the free throw line 69 times. It was a game stocked full of seniors, 10 on each team’s roster, and they locked horns for 32 minutes.

WoodRiver junior Ben Williams (10 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block) and senior Jake Vegwert (9 points, 4 boards, 3 steals) chipped in with season-best scoring totals.

Hailey coach Rick Bradshaw used all 10 players and all contributed. Most Hailey letdowns came in transition defense—the Bulldogs making easy baskets sparked by the passes of point guard Seth Champlin (6 points, 4 steals, 6  assists) and scoring of 6-3 senior post Jade Wadsworth (14 points, 7 boards).

Contributors included Quentin Dowdle (4 points, 3 rebounds), Luis Lopez (4 points), Colton Larkin (3 points), Dylan Carey (2 points, 3 boards, 2 assists), Braxton Parish (1 point, 2 rebounds, 2 steals) and Pedro Contreras (2 boards). Conner Molyneux (10 points, 6 boards, 7-for-10 free throws) helped the Bulldogs.

WoodRiver visits Burley (7-4, 2-2) today, Friday for a Great Basin Conference game and hosts Jerome Wednesday. Jerome (12-1, 4-0) entertains Twin Falls (11-1, 4-0) tonight for GBC leadership. Other teams in the league are Minico (2-9, 1-3) and Canyon Ridge (3-10, 1-3).
