Cyclists bring home Idaho TT titles

Last Saturday, several Wood River valley cyclists competed in the Idaho State Time Trial Championships at Glenns Ferry and brought home state titles. The field had 65 cyclists.

Racing on the old U.S. 30 pavement provided all the elements of an excellent venue—little traffic, good pavement, great views, hot temperatures, and of course wind.

Walter Gilbert (Sun Summit Cycling Club) captured the Men's 35-39 title for 40 kilometers. Tom Campion (Durance-Colnago) won the 20k men's race for 65-69.

John Swyers (Durance-Colnago) emerged as the 20k champion for the 70-plus age group. Nate Galpin (Durance-Colnago) competed the 40k course to claim the Men's Cat. 4 championship.

Richard Feldman (Durance-Colnago), the current World Master's Time Trial Champion, scorched the 40k (24.8 mile) course with a 53:41, besting second place by five minutes.

Feldman, 42, was the first American to win the UCI world masters time trial championship, in 2001 at St. Johann, Austria. He won four more rainbow jerseys in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010. He also won the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race in 1998-99.

Other racers Saturday included Sara Youmans (Peanut Butter and Co, 2012) who came in second place in Women's Cat. 3/4 for the 20k event, and Jon Engen (Durance-Colnago) who was second in the Men's 50-55 40k age group.
