Symphony isn't just for grownups.

The Sun Valley Summer Symphony's Sun Valley Summer Music Workshops are a week of instruction by professional musicians in Sun Valley.

The workshop gives music students an opportunity to explore strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion and piano as well as voice.

The 2011 workshop takes place Aug. 1-5 for elementary, middle and high school students. Classes are for beginning through advanced students. They feature technique workshops, small and large group ensembles, orchestras, advanced chamber ensembles and music enrichment.

Prelude Strings program is offered for developing string players and intermediate orchestra, the Philharmonia and the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra for advanced string players. Upper-intermediate and advanced string players are invited to audition for chamber ensembles.

Technique and master classes, and large and small group ensembles are offered for woodwind and brass instruments plus percussion and piano.

Voice classes and ensembles for a variety of age and ability levels are part of the Summer Music Workshops and select students will have a chance to perform with the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra and Chorus on the Friday evening concert.

This year, the workshop will feature a vocal master class for advanced students, especially those who are preparing for college auditions.

Application deadline for the Summer Music Workshops is Saturday, April 30, and a registration fee for the entire week of instruction is $75.

In addition, musicians will need $15 for a polo shirt that will be worn at performances. A limited number of scholarships are available. Housing is not routinely provided for out-of-area students, but there are a limited number of home stays available for students only.
