Rockin’ out for Rocky at Sagebrush Arena
Rocky Johnson spent years roaming the sideline, writing the lineups and coaching up a storm for the Balltrappers women’s slow-pitch softball team, a Ketchum-based squad that excelled in tournaments all over Idaho. When it came time to help Johnson, the Balltrappers and others came out in force. Johnson, 57, a third-year apprentice electrician working for Poggi Bros. Electric, was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in March and is currently going through chemotherapy. He left today for Seattle, Wash., where he will undergo a bone marrow transplant. On Saturday, Sept. 11, friends staged a “Leukemia Stinks” benefit at Hailey’s Sagebrush Arena to raise the $12,000 that Johnson needs to cover living expenses for four months in Seattle. The dinner with rockin’ music and raffle turned out to be a wonderful success, reaching its fundraising goal and attracting close to 200 well-wishers. Here, cheerful coach Johnson poses with some of his former softball players at Sagebrush Arena during the Sept. 11 benefit. The players are, from left, Tina Murphy, Nicola Miller, Amanda Larese, Kelly Cole, Becky Simpson, Kelly Dawson and Lisa Anderson.
