4 youths arrested for car burglaries

Investigation continues on 30 thefts from unlocked cars

At least 30 unlocked automobiles in Hailey were robbed during the past two weeks, police reported Monday. Fifteen of those burglaries have been attributed to four youths arrested by Hailey police this week.

The names of the juvenile detainees have not been released because they are under age 21.

Police responded to 15 reports of thefts from automobiles last week, Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter said.

"They took iPods, cash and other items," he said.

Gunter said an investigation led to the arrest of the four suspected thieves, three from Bellevue and one from Hailey.

Gunter said some of the stolen property has been recovered, but the rest was thrown away.

On Monday, Gunter said his job of tracking car thieves may have just begun.

"We got 15 more reports of similar thefts today," he said.

Gunter advised Hailey residents to lock their automobiles and to be aware of neighborhood disturbances in the night, such as barking dogs and inside lights in cars being left on.

"If you see or hear anything suspicious, give us a call," he said.
