Maytag has issued a recall on 1.7 million dishwashers sold from February 2006 to April 2010.
According to the Maytag website, the recall, which affects six Maytag brands, comes in response to reports of faulty wiring and fire hazards posed by the machines. So far, 12 house fires have been attributed to failure of the dishwashers' heating elements. No injuries have been reported, though at least one fire resulted in extensive property damage.
Owners of Maytag, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Jenn-air, Crosley and Performa by Maytag dishwashers are urged to check Maytag's website to see if their machines are included in the recall. The website, www.maytag.com, provides a list of serial and model numbers for affected machines, as well as information on how to obtain a rebate or repair.

The dishwashers have plastic tubs and either black, bisque, white, silver or stainless steel front panels. Serial and model numbers can be found on a label on the left side of the tub inside the dishwasher.
Dishwashers matching the listed serial numbers should immediately be disconnected from the electric supply, which can be done by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it. Users should then contact Maytag via their website or by phone at (800) 544-5513.
Owners should not return the machines to local retailers, as retailers are unprepared to take them back.
