The scent of the mountain air, especially first thing in the morning, fresh from the north country, is one of the greatest pleasures of being in the Wood River Valley. So I was saddened that last week the smell of poisonous sprays, I suspect to control dandelions, dominated the air, even at 8 a.m.
I, too, hate to let pesky weeds take over my lawn and garden, but if we want to give the birds, bees and butterflies a chance, we must make a choice. We can pull or mow the dandelions, or simply decide they are preferable to compromising the life of the winged things we cherish, which should be able to thrive in this place. I simply ask you to think of the consequences of routinely spraying.
