These Ironmen showed no rust

Local athletes participate in Boise 70.3


Several Wood River Valley athletes tackled the Ironman 70.3 in Boise on Saturday. The event featured a 1.2-mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.

Ketchum's Scott Tucker was the top local finisher in 87th place overall with a total time of 5 hours, 4 minutes and 27 seconds. He was eighth in the men's 45-49 class.

In a field of more than 1,200 participants, Hailey's Daryl Fauth was 23rd in the men's 40-44 class and 210th overall in 5:29.43. Mollie Holt was 22nd in the women's 30-34 class and 356th in 5:50.15. Christina Cord Questad finished 26th and 449th in 06:01.56. Jessica Gundy was 39th/717th in 6:38.30.

In men's 30-34 class, Matt Wellner finished 52nd in 5:51.51, placing 369th overall. Dave Gundy was 60th/462nd in 6:04.32.

In the 60-64 class, Dave McBryant posted the second-fastest swim, and third-fastest biking and running legs to finish third. Overall, McBryant was in the middle of the pack at 681st in 6:34.47.

Jim Hague was 37th in the men's 50-54 class and 846th overall in 6:57.37. Susan Gundy had the third-fastest cycling leg in the 55-59 group to place fourth. Gundy was 1,001 with a total time of 7:25.35. 1,227 started the race and 1,209 finished.

"The water was perfect, wind on the bike was horrific and torturous, making the run grueling," Gundy said. "Great race, awesome volunteers and amazing race support, truly first class."

Boulder, Colorado's Craig Hoffman and Julie Dibens were the overall champions. Originally from Australia, the 37-year-old Hoffman won in 4:02.11, just 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Ben Hoffman of Durango. A native Brit and past World champion, Dibens, 35, clocked in at 4:25.14 to place 19th overall.

A $25,000 purse and 50 qualifying slots for pro and age group athletes for the Ironman World Championships were awarded.
