U-12 boys second in Pocatello soccer

The Sawtooth United F.C. U-12 boys' soccer team competed in the 24th annual Portneuf Valley Spring Classic tourney April 16-18 in the glorious sunshine of Pocatello, coach Richard Whitelaw reported.

Whitelaw's "lads" went 2-1 and finished second in their group but didn't advance to the championship game due to an unusual finish to their excruciatingly close 2-1 loss to Apollo Crew of Pocatello.

"The match of the weekend was definitely the Apollo Crew clash, which resulted in the Crew securing a 2-1 win with the absolute last kick of the game," said Whitelaw. "It was yet again another classic encounter with our nemesis, end-to-end stuff but not a lot of clear-cut chances. Defense was the order of the day.

"It was the first match I've ever been involved in, when the referee blew his whistle to signal a goal and also blew to signal full time, all in the same breath. A goal mouth scramble enabled the Crew to have one final shot which hit the underneath of the crossbar and over the line. Game over. Unbelievable. Good for the Crew however. I thought I'd seen it all!"

Keegan Whitelaw scored the SUFC goal against the Crew.

In other games: SUFC beat PVSC of Pocatello 3-2 on goals by Keegan Whitelaw (2) and Danny Graves; and SUFC whipped Manchester of Idaho Falls 8-0 on goals by Henry Everitt 2, Tom Gillespie 2, Jack Dwyer 2, Yuri McClure and Theo Castellano Wood. Carter Ros preserved the clean sheet.

Other players on the squad were Emmitt Stevens, Garrett Rawlings, Joey Reidy, Mikey Levy and Alex Schwartz.

Next, the Canyon Rim Classic this weekend in Twin Falls.

The Bigwood Golf Course opened Monday, which couldn't have been better timing with the mountain closing Sunday, according to Derek Agnew, general manager of Thunder Spring, LLC and Zenergy Health Club and Spa.

"We thought the opening was going to be Thursday (April 22), but warm days melted everything," he said.

Agnew said, "We obviously understand what's happened with the local economy and want to make Bigwood even more affordable for the locals."

He said, "We've also lowered the golf cart rate by a few dollars to $10 for nine and $15 for 18 (old price was $12 and $18).

Peak Season rates starting June 18 have also been reduced for 2010. Last year they were $46 for nine holes and $86 for 18. This year, the rates have dropped to $40 for nine holes and $80 for $18.
