Come mid-March, the Blaine County School District expects to have a Spanish-language Web site up and running.
"The purpose of the Spanish Web site is to ensure that all Spanish-speaking members of our community have access to useful information provided by the school district," Molly Michalec, the district's Latino services coordinator, wrote in an e-mail to the Idaho Mountain Express. "I believe it will be a powerful tool for Spanish-speaking families and a place to gain knowledge about anything from our programs and policies, to parenting and reading tips, to important news and events."
Michalec wrote that the only costs to the district are staff time for design, implementation and updating.
Michalec discussed the Web site with the board of trustees at a Feb. 9 school board meeting. According to her presentation, 32 percent of the district's students are now Hispanic and 20 percent of the district's students are not proficient in the English language.
The Web site address will be www.blaineschools.org/espanol, but the site will also be accessible on an "en español" link at the district's regular Web site.
Michalec said the Web site is only one new way of reaching the area's growing Hispanic community. The district is also implementing a Spanish-language newsletter with the first issue set for release in March.
