The Hailey City Council signed off on preliminary plans for redevelopment of the town's historic rodeo grounds Monday, paving the way for a fundraising campaign to match $3 million the city has pledged for the site.
The plans, submitted by the Ketchum-based Ruscitto/Latham/Blanton architectural firm, will proceed to the Hailey Planning and Zoning Commission for design review. The council instructed architect Michael Bulls to add elements that would distinguish the historic rodeo arena for what it is, perhaps using fragments of the murals from the well-known "white wall" at the southern entrance to the city.
The plan calls for an ice-skating rink, an expanded skate park and a renovated rodeo arena, used by the Sawtooth Rangers riding club since 1948.
The new and improved rodeo grounds could also be used for concerts, farmers' markets and other community events.
