Drag Racing, Stanley Style

Fifteen contestants and close to 300 spectators lined the main drag of Stanley, Ace of Diamonds Avenue, on Saturday for a unique snowshoe race, the highlight of Stanley’s first two-day Winterfest. The festival was designed to bring people to the sleepy mountain village in the middle of winter. Frank Juiliano, a city councilman and one of the event organizers, said the crowd “far exceeded” expectations. “Our chamber has allowed Stanley to die during the winter and it is clear from this event that our citizens aren’t going to allow that to happen,” Juiliano said. Stanley business owner Tim Cron, right, in a blue dress, won the race. “I’ve been training all winter for this,” he quipped. Other activities included snowman building, tubing, snowmobile racing and a pond hockey “Stanley Cup” tournament.
