Griffin Post takes Freeskiing title at Crested Butte

Former Sun Valley skier Griffin Post won the men's division of the 19th annual Subaru U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Crested Butte, Colo.

Post, of Jackson Hole, Wyo., came out on top with a high score of 94-flat. He skied two first-place runs, for both the Finals and Super Finals on Sunday. Both runs were the same technical line through Body Bag, which he skied with unprecedented speed, fluidity and aggression, according to a Mountain Sports International press release. He sealed his top spot by straight-lining and stomping a 30-foot air.

Kindercup set for Saturday at Dollar Mountain

The 54th annual Papoose Club Kindercup alpine ski races for kids ages 3-13 are set for Saturday, Feb. 27 at Carol's Dollar Mountain Lodge. Registration takes place there from 8:30-9:30 a.m. with racing at 10:15 a.m. followed by the famous awards presentation. Remember, the race is free of charge. Pre-register by today at Dollar Lodge or Sturtevants in Ketchum and Hailey. Last year there were 286 participants.

Bantams at Salmon

The Sun Valley Bantams (13-14) stepped up an age group to participate in the U-16 Salmon Invitational Feb. 12-14.

Sun Valley (0-4) improved with every game, even scoring a goal against the top-ranked Spokane Chiefs. Cameron Benson, a first-year Bantam, found the back of the net to end the four-game, five-team tilt on a good note.

The Suns also played the Spokane Raiders, Salmon and Idaho Falls. Coached by Bobby Noyes and Chris Zarkos, the team will finish the season at Idaho Falls on Feb. 28.

Volleyball club wins tournament at Gooding

The Wood River Volleyball Club seventh-grade team won its first tournament of the club season Saturday, Feb. 20 in Gooding. Wood River finished first in the nine-team tournament beating Kimberly in the finals two games to one. Team members for Wood River coach Kristi Vandenberg were Brittney Bradley, Rachael Malone, Emma Poe, Ciceley Peavey, Megan Lube, Valeria Morse, Isabella Stimac, Sarah Carty, Tayler Bosch, Raylin Lyons, Sami Goitiandia and Rory Cole.

BCRD holds Snow Box Derby

The Blaine County Recreation District is staging its ninth annual Snow Box Derby Sunday, Feb. 28 at Hailey's Rotarun Ski Area. Participants design, build and race their own cardboard sleds in an event that is fun for the entire family. It is open to anyone ages five-and-up. This year's age divisions are PeeWee (ages 5-8), Junior (9-12), Teen (13-17), Adult (18-and-up) and Business. Cost is $10 per participant, or $25 for businesses. Check-in Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m. with racing at 10:15 a.m. Or visit BCRD (788-2117) beforehand at The Community Campus and get the rules at bcrd.org. Sponsors include Rotarun, Sun Valley Brewing Co., Ruscitto/Latham/Blanton and Wood River Kiwanis Club.

Ski Club holds Galena Yurt Lunch on March 4

Be sure to make your reservations by today, Wednesday, Feb. 24 for the Sun Valley Ski Club Snowshoe to a Galena Yurt Lunch scheduled for Thursday, March 4. Cost for lunch is $22 per person and there is a limit of 20 people. Call the club at 622-3003 to reserve a spot. You must have a trail pass and can purchase one at Galena for $3. You can also rent snowshoes there. Meet on the Galena Lodge deck at 10:30 a.m. next Thursday to go with the group. Bring your own drinks. There are two different trails to the yurt—one long trail and a shorter, steeper trail. Both are very scenic. The menu features soup and sandwich, wine and dessert. Lunch is served at 12 noon.

B+ hockey update

With three regular season games to go the Sharks are making a B+ League statement.

The Sharks (8-2-1) thrashed the Senators (2-5-4) by an 8-1 score Sunday at Sun Valley Skating Center. Eric Wingard, Rob Prew and Brad Musbach each had two goals along with single goals from Jim Slanetz and Christl Holzl. Lucy Chubb had the Senators goal.

Hutch's Bad Dog's (3-6-2) held off third-place Isles (5-4-2) in a 5-2 game. John Baker and Mako Johnson had two goals and Buck Drew added one. The Isles had numerous opportunities but John Heinrich and Baba Street were the only scorers.

Second-place Vipers (6-3-2) erased a 3-1 deficit and earned a 3-3 tie with the Wildcats (2-6-3) on a Benjy Walker goal with 10 seconds left. Dan Gralenski had the other two goals for the Vipers. Billy Sprong, Dave Gittens and Chris Peterson scored for the Wildcats.

SUFC youth soccer registration

Player Registration for Sawtooth United's 2010 Spring Developmental and Recreational soccer program is underway and will continue through March 19. The program is for boys and girls of all soccer ability levels, ages 5-10. Practices begin the week of April 5 and the season runs through May 23.
