Nordic nationals wrap up, Prairie Creek Snowmaker is held

The 2010 ConocoPhillips U.S. Cross Country Championships wrapped up Friday with classic sprints, an Olympic event, at Anchorage, Alaska. And American teams were named for further international races.

What won't be known until Tuesday, Jan. 19 is the make-up of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Nordic team. Last week's national championships at Kincaid Park were the final opportunity for skiers to earn USSA national ranking list points, a criteria for Olympic team selection.

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) Olympic Development Team coach Travis Jones came back to Ketchum from Anchorage this week with a couple of distinct impressions from nationals.

He said Ketchum's Morgan Arritola stands a very good chance of making her first Olympic team—and that 22-year-old Simi Hamilton from Aspen has become one of the top two sprinters in the U.S.

"Simi is one of the four or five skiers who have made an impression in the series of races since Thanksgiving.

Hamilton is one of four SVSEF skiers who have qualified for World Cup races Feb. 5-6 at Canmore, Alberta, Canada. They are Arritola and Nicole DeYong distances, Mike Sinnott and Hamilton in sprints.

Also, Hamilton (U-23) and Adele Espy (Junior) are headed to the World Junior Nordic Championships Jan. 25-31 at Hinterzarten, Germany. Former SVSEF skier/coach Pat Casey is in charge of the 11-skier American U-23 squad, while coach Abi Holt has also been named to the staff.

Erik Fagerstrom is an alternate for World Juniors.

Sinnott and DeYong will compete in SuperTour races Jan. 16-17 at Methow Valley, Winthrop, Wash. Racers will race a 1.3-kilometer skate sprint Saturday. On Sunday the men race a 15k classic distance event and the women and juniors a 10k classic distance race.

Classic distances, sprints

Sinnott, 24, and Kate Whitcomb, 29, won their B Final heats and finished seventh overall in U.S. National Classic Sprint finals Friday at Anchorage. There were 112 men and 102 women in the sprints.

In sprint qualifications, Sinnott was fifth and Whitcomb 11th. Anchorage's Kikkan Randall, 27, took her 14th national title in the women's final and Tyler Kornfield of Fairbanks, Alaska won his first title.

Also making men's quarterfinals were Colin Rodgers, 28, Hamilton and Reid Pletcher, 21, of the University of Colorado. In female U-23, Mali Noyes (8th overall) finished second and Alexa Turzian (10th) fourth in the B Final, Fagerstrom was fourth in the Junior A Final.

In snowy weather Wednesday, it wasn't the greatest of days for SVSEF skiers. Arritola had the best result in seventh place of 63 finishers in the national women's 20-kilometer classic race that began in driving snow at Kincaid Park.

Arritola, 23, was a full two minutes and 29 seconds behind the winning time of Randall. Top local man in the men's 30k classic distance race was Mike Sinnott in 26th place.

Wednesday, women's 20k classic: 1—Randall 1.14:19. 7—Arritola 1.16:48. 11—DeYong 1.18:11. 22—Turzian 1.20:15. 26—Whitcomb 1.21:25. 37—Noyes 1.26:25 (72 starters and 63 finishers).

Wednesday, men's 30k classic: 1—James Southam 1.32:08. 26—Sinnott 1.41:35. DNF—Hamilton, Pletcher and Rodgers (68 starters and 55 finishers).
