Skiers busy on first weekend of 2010

Busby captures Cranston Cup honor

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation skiers welcomed the New Year during races Jan. 7-10 on slopes in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming. And young Samantha Busby won the overall Cranston Cup title Sunday.

Western Region Alpine Tech

Coaches Erika Hogan and Tyler Palmer accompanied seven SVSEF racers to the four-race series staged on CB's run at Park City, Utah and Wilbere Ridge at Snowbird. There were 123 men and 110 women in a field stacked with NCAA collegiate ski racers. Results:

Men's slalom: Miles Fink DeBray 19th and 17th overall; Bergen Palmer 27th and 24th overall (11th and 7th J1); Tanner Farrow 31st and 26th overall (3rd and 1st J2).

Men's giant slalom: Miles Fink-Debray 11th and 17th overall; Bergen Palmer 57th and DNF; Tanner Farrow 49th and 62nd overall (4th J2).

Women's giant slalom: Teagen Palmer 21st and 22nd overall (2nd and 4th J2); Nina Hirner 29th and 42nd overall (11th J1); Nicole Roos 35th and 40th overall (8th and 11th J2); Amanda Stelling 30th and 30th overall (6th and 6th J2).

Women's slalom: Teagen Palmer DNF and 11th overall (3rd J2); Nina Hirner 32nd and 26th overall; Nicole Roos 24th and 17th overall (6th and 8th J2); Amanda Stelling DNF and 27th overall.

Sean Nurse slaloms

Jackson Hole's Snow King Resort hosted the Sean Nurse Memorial Slaloms, an Intermountain Division J3 (13-14) qualifying event Jan. 9-10. There were 57 boys and 48 girls, and a traveling group of 14 from Sun Valley Top placings for SVSEF:

Boys: 2—KJ Savaria. 4—William Harder. 6—Ben Kanellitsas. 7—Kipling Weisel. 11—Cole Caulkins. 20—Taylor Adler. 25—Lane Coulthard. 29—Tanner Josey.

Girls: 9—Marlow Mizer. 10—Jordan Fitzgerald. 12—Sofia DeWolfe. 27—Marcia Smith. 29—Natalie Bunting. 34—Chloe Francois.

Cranston Cup at Bogus Basin

Sun Valley J4 racer Samantha Busby won the Cranston Cup overall title Sunday.

There were 42 SVSEF young skiers in the field for the 59th annual Cranston Cup North Series slalom races Jan. 9-10 at Boise's Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area. In all, there were 83 boys and 66 girls from ages 7-14, or J3 through J6.

J4 boys (ages 11-12): 1—Taylor Cooper. 3—Austin Savaria. 6—Trenor Gould. 7—Jay Fitzgerald. 8—Kyle Maxwell and John Blackburn. 9—Will Snyder and Emmett Say. 10—Jack Rizzo. 11—Gavin Shipley. 12—Duncan Fuller. 16—Wyatt Smith. 17—Michael Levy. 18—Will Long and River Vorse-Whittier. 19—Cade Street. 21—Griffin Curtis. 22—Clay Cutler. 24—Carson Jones-Wilkins. 26—King Hopkins. 32—Travis Wilkinson. Also racing was Yuri McClure.
