Ketchum ‘snow tow’ policy in effect

The Ketchum Police Department is reminding vehicle owners that the city's 'snow tow' policy is now in effect and violators can be subjected to tickets and towed vehicles.

Effective each snow season from Nov. 1 to March 1, the relevant city ordinance requires that vehicles not be parked in city street rights of way from 2 a.m. until 7 a.m.

"This allows the Ketchum Street Department to properly clear the snow and ice from city streets," Police Chief Steve Harkins stated in a news release. "This applies to every city street in Ketchum, especially the downtown core area."

Street rights of way are the areas within 15 feet of roads. Fines are $20, and must be paid before the vehicle is released by the towing company, which will also charge the owner a towing bill.

"Since we live in an area that sometimes gets heavy snowfall, it is important for the public to understand this ordinance," Harkins stated. "In the past, the Ketchum Police Department had the ability to relocate vehicles. This is no longer an option."
