Airport seeks federal grant money

The Friedman Memorial Airport Authority, with support from the Fly Sun Valley Alliance and Sun Valley Resort, has applied for a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The grant would be funded through the department's Small Community Air Service Development Program, which has a grant pool of $8 million for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

In a news release on Friday, Maurice Charlat, president of the nonprofit Fly Sun Valley Alliance, said the grant would be matched by $50,000 from the local community in both cash and in-kind support.

The funding would be used to help increase marketing of the valley in an effort to expand air service.

In 2003, Hailey was awarded a similar $600,000 grant, which was used to help secure daily flights between Sun Valley and Los Angeles.

"With the economy challenging so many businesses in our community, we felt this is a critical time to submit a grant [application] to help us maintain this critical air service, which is so important to the long-term health of our overall economy," Charlat said.
