Playing in sunny weather for the coveted "Golden Shovel," ice hockey players had fun skating in last weekend's second annual Pond Hockey Classic at Ketchum's Atkinson Park and Roberta McKercher Park's Hailey Ice arena.
Saturday's winners in Ketchum were the University of Idaho Vandals 6-3 over The Lumberjacks. The Vandals were Piers Lamb, Rob Karinen, Tyler Thomas, Trevor Mahlum, Bob Leahy and Kevin Warburton. The 'Jacks were Erik Kafka, Tommy Trieshman, Crist Cook, Kainoa Lopez, Shannon Flavin and Ned Burns.
Sunday, the defending champion "MSG&1M" (Mostly Small Guys and One Medium), consisting of Jamie Ellison, John Ellison Jr., Ivars Muzis, Vilnis Nikolaisons and Ryan Enrico, remained strong a year later and made it all the way back to the championship tilt.
But the infamous "Dutch Rudders" stayed on their ankles long enough to upset "MSG&1M" by a 5-3 score. The newbies with the shovel from the Netherlands were Ryan Thomson, Blake Jenson, Jon Duval and Charles Friedman.
Sponsors included Sun Valley Brewing, Hayden Beverage, Pepsi, Albertsons, Idaho Lumber, Stock and T-Graphics.
