Skyview's Hawks are Wood River's draw, again

At State 4A volleyball in Idaho Falls

Wood River sophomore setter Jessica Hamilton passes the ball during her team’s Great Basin Conference West championship victory over Jerome Oct. 21 at the Hailey school gym in Hailey.

It could turn out to be a tough assignment, a scary Halloween fright, for the Wood River High School volleyball team Friday, Oct. 31 in the first round of the State 4A tournament at Skyline in Idaho Falls.

Third District champion Skyview of Nampa (17-0, 14-0 league), still seeking its first-ever state volleyball title, will provide the competition in Wood River's opening match Friday at 1 p.m. Having never lost a game in its 17 regular-season match wins, Skyview is ranked second in the state behind reigning 4A champion Bonneville of Idaho Falls (33-1).

Skyview going against Wood River is the same first-round match-up as last year's state meet. Skyview won that match over the Wolverines in three games at Lake City High.

A loss to Skyview would likely send coach Tim Richards' Wolverines up against Rigby (28-17) at 8:15 p.m. Friday. Two of the eight 4A teams will be eliminated Friday, and the remaining six will return to the Skyline High hardwoods Saturday.

Wood River (22-11), making its 22nd state tournament trip, ended up drawing Skyview because of its 25-16, 25-19, 25-13 loss to Century of Pocatello in last Thursday's Great Basin Conference championship match on the Century floor.

Century (42-6) will play Boise-area third-place Kuna in another opening-round match Friday, the winner likely playing Bonneville. Last year's state runner-up Sandpoint could play Skyview in Friday night's semi-final, if Skyview wins over Wood River in the opener.
