This usually reliable newspaper's lead editorial in last Wednesday's edition entitled "Death knell for workforce housing?" was, unfortunately, unhelpful to furthering informed local debate on this important subject. In the most inflammatory terms—"death knell" "the coffin and the nails" "cowardly councils" "abandoning workers"—the editorial criticizes the Ketchum City Council for their rejection of Thunder Springs' attempt to utilize the "open space" parcel immediately adjacent to the Ketchum Cemetery to satisfy the development's affordable housing requirements.
The Mountain Express would have its readers believe that this was a vote against workplace housing. It was not. The Council retains its full power to assure compliance with those housing requirements at a site that will have no adverse impact on the Ketchum Cemetery and that, as far as I know, none of the Bigwood homeowners have objected to (notwithstanding being closer in proximity to most of their homes): at the Thunder Springs site itself. The Mountain Express owes its readers an explanation why no mention of this was included in the paper's July 23 editorial.
