Tennis teams clash again, get ready for districts

WRHS downs shorthanded Fish 12-0

Wood River High School #2 boys’ singles player R.J. Forgeon zeroes in on another winner for the Hailey team.

It's been a busy spring of competition for the Wood River High School tennis team. In comparison, The Community School's tennis schedule has been more sporadic, between school trips and bad weather.

The two Wood River tennis teams, always a force at state tournament time, got together for the second time this spring Tuesday at Sun Valley Tennis Club. And it was all Wood River, 12-0, as five of the key Cutthroat senior players were still off on senior projects.

Wood River swept singles with only one of the six matches going to split sets. Wood River's #1 Carlos Neme defeated Paul Davis 6-2, 6-3, although Cutthroat coach Phil Huss thought Davis did a good job staying in there with Neme.

In the #3 boys' singles match, Jordan Niedrich of Wood River prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a great match with 20 ball rallies, Huss said. Another good match was in #1 boys' doubles, won by Wood River's Scott and Morgan Pike 7-6, 3-6, 6-0 over Peter Atkinson and Tanner Flanigan of Sun Valley.

"Wood River had the better volleys," Huss acknowledged.

Straight-set winners in girls' doubles for Wood River were Tessa Barrow and Kami Doan, Jessica Hamilton and Ellen Davis. The #1 Wolverine mixed doubles team of Karl Fostvedt and Ainsley Gourlay also dominated, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Wood River girls' singles players Anna Chrysikopoulos, Maya Diem and Jordan Hendricks won in straight sets.

In Monday's 9-3 Community School league win over the Sugar-Salem Diggers, the Fish won five of six singles matches with Davis, Chet Stephens, Jamie Jameson, Courtney Hamilton and Emmy O'Reilly.

The home team swept boys' and girls' doubles over the Diggers with Atkinson and Flanigan, Wyatt Bunce and McClain Porter, Ricki Eshman and Courtlyn Jones, and Austin Nalen and Marin Shepardson.

Wood River finishes its regular-season slate in Pocatello Saturday, May 3, with Great Basin Conference matches against Pocatello at 10 a.m. and Century afterwards. Century will host the state qualifying conference tournament Wednesday, May 7.

After hosting Twin Falls Thursday, The Community School entertains Minico of Rupert today, Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Sun Valley Tennis Club and travels south to Gooding next Tuesday. The Fourth District meet is Friday, May 9.
