A former Verizon Wireless employee has been charged with felony grand theft for allegedly stealing $1,600 in cash from the Hailey business.

Laura Martinez, a 21-year-old Hailey woman, was formally charged with the crime last Thursday in Blaine County Magistrate Court. She was arrested on Wednesday, March 26, following an investigation by the Hailey Police Department.

Police Chief Jeff Gunter said the investigation was started on Tuesday, March 25, when the company complained that cash was missing that was intended for bank deposits.

"Two deposits were missing from February," Gunter said.

Several employees were interviewed but Martinez was identified as the alleged culprit. Gunter said Martinez, who had worked at Verizon less than a year, was responsible for seeing that the money was deposited.

Martinez was released from the Blaine County Jail later Thursday after posting $1,500 bond. The Roark Law Firm of Hailey was appointed to represent her through its public defender contract with Blaine County. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 9.
