Fatal Accident Claims 2 Lives
A car crash Thursday on state Highway 75, one mile north of its junction with U.S. Highway 20 south of Bellevue, claimed the lives of two people just after 1:30 p.m. Both victims were in a Toyota pickup truck that was northbound when it apparently swerved across the centerline into the path of a southbound Meadow Gold milk truck. The driver of the semi said he swerved to avoid the pickup but was unable to. Both vehicles came to rest on the west side of the highway. The semi?s trailer stretched across the highway, blocking traffic for several hours. High winds and blowing snow reportedly created low visibility in the area all day. ?This is the only section of ice-covered road for miles and miles in either direction,? the distraught driver of the semi said later. Two ambulances arrived to take the victims to St. Luke?s Wood River Medical Center. The semi?s driver said he was fine, but a representative of Meadow Gold arrived later to take him to the hospital. The names of the victims were not released pending notification of next of kin. Photo by David N. Seelig
