Polebangers have the skierís edge at Mammoth

Podiums at Masters Nationals


Sun Valley-based Masters alpine ski racers swept up a bunch of podiums during the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Skier's Edge Alpine Masters National Championships staged March 17-22 at Mammoth Mountain, Ca.

The Women's Class 9 (ages 65-69) was an Intermountain lock with Nancy Auseklis winning the giant slalom, slalom and combined gold medals, Glenn McConkey taking the silver in super giant slalom, GS and combined, and Anna Droege winning the SG and bronze in combined.

Virginia Reed, in Women's 75-79, ran the table in her class by winning SG, SL, GS and combined.

Gold medalists included 85-89 star John Droege (GS), Al Auseklis (SL), Carl Fullman (GS) and Rosemary Moschel (SL, GS, combined).

Earning silver were John Droege (SG), Carl Fullman (SG), Cliff Cunha (SL) and John Campbell (GS). Bronze went to Al Auseklis (combined), Rosemary Moschel (SG), Bob Sarchett (SL, combined) and Bob Dreyer (SG).

With 35 competitors in the 208-racer field, the Intermountain Division won the Division's Cup awarded to the division with the best ratio of points scored per competitor start for all races in the national meet.

Venue for downhill and super giant slalom races was the World Cup course that runs from the bottom of Cornice Bowl on the upper mountain down onto Fascination, the main race hill at the base area.

Giant slaloms were on Terry's run and slalom held on Fascination. Local results:

Men's Class 13 (85-89): John Droege 2-SG/DNF-SL/1-GS.

Women's Class 11 (75-79): Virginia Reed 1-SG/1-SL/1-GS/1-combined.

Men's Class 11: Al Auseklis 5-SG/1-SL/5-GS/3-combined; Drury Cooper 9-SG/8-SL/8-GS/8-combined.

Men's Class 10 (70-74): Carl Fullman 2-SG/DNF-SL/1-GS.

Women's Class 9 (65-69): Nancy Auseklis 4-SG/1-SL/1-GS/1-combined; Glenn McConkey 2-SG/3-SL/2-GS/2-combined; and Anna Droege 1-SG/4-SL/4-GS/3-combined.

Men's Class 9: Steve Slivinski 9-SG/8-SL/8-GS/7-combined.

Women's Class 8 (60-64): Rosemary Moschel 3-SG/1-SL/1-GS/1-combined.

Men's Class 8: Bob Sarchett 7-SG/3-SL/5-GS/3-combined; Bob Dreyer 3-SG/DSQ-GS.

Men's Class 7 (55-59): Cliff Cunha 4-SG/DSQ-GS/2-SL.

Men's Class 5 (45-49): John Campbell 7-SG/2-GS/DNF-SL.
