Poker for donations tonight

The Wood River Baseball and Softball Association will have its first annual Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament for today, Friday, Feb. 8, from 7-10 p.m. at St. Charles Parish Hall, Hailey. Bring a $50 donation for the association. It will be a timed three-hour game, with prizes going to the top three places. The field is limited to 50 players. RSVP to Matt Nelson at 578-5030 ext. 2334. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

Leif's Race is Sunday

As part of its 71st anniversary celebration, the Sun Valley Ski Club will stage the annual Leif's Gates and Nordic Combined event Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Sun Valley resort. It remembers Nordic pioneer Leif Odmark, who died in 2004 at age 84.

The event includes one run of giant slalom racing on Baldy's Cozy ski run at 10 a.m. Sunday (register 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Warm Springs Lodge). It's for anyone with alpine, telemark or snowboard equipment. Alpine racing is followed by a mass-start, 5-kilometer Nordic race (freestyle or classic technique) at 12:30 p.m. at Sun Valley Nordic Center. Awards and lunch immediately follow at Trail Creek Cabin.

Quigley Nordic Cup Sunday

The Papoose Club will stage its third annual Quigley Nordic Cup race for kids up to age 13 on Sunday, Feb. 10, on the Quigley Nordic Course, Hailey. Registration is from 10-10:30 a.m. with racing at 11 a.m.

Soldier Mountain downhill begins Monday

Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing is gearing up for the annual Soldier Mountain Downhill/Ken Corrock races and Sammis/Camas Cup from Monday, Feb. 11, through Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Soldier Mountain Ski Area north of Fairfield. It is Stage 4 of the 2008 Molecule F Speed Series and will attract many Intermountain Division Masters racers from Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.

The three-day event begins Monday, Feb. 11, with a downhill camp conducted by Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing head coach Corrock along with Andy Chambers.

Activities Tuesday include the mandatory competitors' meeting at 8:30 a.m. and a 10:30 a.m. training run. The 11th annual Sammis/Camas Cup elimination round is at 1 p.m. followed by the 2:30 p.m. finals. The memorial race honors Brett Sammis. Next Wednesday's Intermountain Masters downhill begins at 11 a.m. with a second downhill at 1 p.m. and super combined slalom 3 p.m.

Gymnastics in Boise

Four members of the Wood River Gymnastics Academy competition team competed this past Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Gem State Invitational Gymnastics meet, held at Expo Idaho, Boise.

Alma Stosius, 13, won first place in all-around, in the Level Four 11-14 age group, and brought home the Jenny Hawkinson Award, presented to the gymnast who excelled the most in each age group. Stosius placed first on vault, bar and floor, and 3rd on beam. Jennie Williams, 13, won 4th in all-around score, placing 7th on vault, 3rd on bar, 4th on beam, and tying teammate Stosius for first on floor, both with 9.6.

Competing for the first time was Kaili Smith, 14, who placed 8th in all-around, with a 6th on vault, 7th on bar, 9th on beam and 7th floor. Also competing for the first time was Callie Weber, 11, who placed 10th in all-around, 9th on vault, 10th on bar and beam, and 8th on floor.
