It was a pretty good midweek downhill for Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation J2 (ages 15-16) boys like Michael Radford and Riley Berman, along with Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing's J1 (17-19) leader Alisa Durkheimer.
Fairfield's Soldier Mountain Ski Area staged the two-day Intermountain Cup/A-J3 Open Series Soldier Mountain Downhills Jan. 15-16. There were 90 racers ages of 13 through 18 competing in sunny weather on groomed runs.
Radford won the J2 boys' class in both of his starts and was third and fourth in the entire field. Berman's best finish came Wednesday, a second-place overall. He podiumed in all three races for the J2 boys. Durkheimer was twice a silver medalist in overall and J2.
Sun Valley J2 Bailey Ireland earned a class bronze and silver. She was seventh overall twice. Tanner Farrow and Connor Farrow of Sun Valley took J3 (ages 13-14) silver medals and Cate Fairley of Sun Valley won J3 girls all three races.
Course setter Ken Corrock, head coach of Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing team, said the first race Tuesday, Jan. 15 was a two-run downhill off the lower chair due to wind. Both of the 32-gate races Wednesday, Jan. 16 were run from the top of Air Ride/Salmon/River Run.
SVSEF Alpine Director Ruben Macaya said, "On Tuesday the winds hampered our efforts. We had 50 mph gusts. Wednesday we could ski from the top. It was absolutely gorgeous. We had no wind, it was clear as a bell and the course was hard as pavement."
There were 30 girls and 60 boys from Idaho, Wyoming and Utah in the race event sponsored by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation and Soldier Mountain Alpine Racing. Here are class placings by race for the 19 local racers starting with Tuesday's downhills.
J1 girls: Alisa Durkheimer 2-DH/2-DH/3-DH.
