Panther spikers play tough in Mackay

The Carey High School varsity volleyball squad played tough in Mackay Wednesday night but fell in the fourth set to the Miners for a 3-1 loss.

"We had a chance to win the first one and we had a chance to win the fourth one," said Carey junior varsity coach Dick Simpson. "Overall the girls played very well."

The first set wasn't settled until 60 points were scored, but the Miners out-dueled the Panthers 31-29. Set two was close also but again the Miners prevailed 25-23.

Set three belonged to the Panthers has they outscored Mackay 25-12. Mackay won set four 25-23.

The loss dropped Carey to 3-10 overall. The team is 1-3 in league play.

"This bunch of girls hasn't played together much," said Simpson. "We're coming along though. We're a lot better not than we were at the beginning. It's not how you start it's how you finish."

The Carey junior varsity squad also played tough, but lost two close sets to the Miners 25-23, 25-23.

Wednesday's matches in Mackay followed a Carey hosted varsity tri-meet Tuesday. Carey defeated Wendell 26-24, 25-23, but fell to Northside Conference rival Shoshone 25-13, 25-20, 25-23.

The Carey girls played the Cutthroats at The Community School in Sun Valley on Thursday evening.

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, Carey hosts the Camas County Mushers in another league contest. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m., followed by varsity action at 7:30 p.m.
